"I've never seen penalty shots that bad," said Cowichan coach Glen Martin. Cowichan finished the tournament with a 1-0 win over Powell River on a Brougham goal. Martin has no illusions that his team will be a huge underdog in the Island tournament. "At least we go to the next stage," he reasoned.

"The boys had a good start to the game, a lot better than the Gorge game," said Cowichan coach Glen Martin.

Cowichan dropped a 4-1 decision to perennial powerhouse Gorge in its season-opener on the road the previous Friday.

The young Sussex squad came out with much more purpose against Bays, but wasn't rewarded for its efforts.

"The game should have been over in the first 15 or 20 minutes," said Martin.
    ...
"The boys were kind of happy, but not happy because we gave away two points," said Martin.

Cowichan coach Glen Martin thinks it's unlikely Gorge will lose a game all season after what he witnessed from the team Friday at Victoria's Hampton Park.Gorge prevailed 4-1.

"They were better than us on the day, there's no doubt about it," said Martin.
    ...
Martin let former Gorge player Ryan Andre take it and he made no mistake.

    It stayed 2-1 until halftime.
    ...
"We just didn't pick up our check," Martin said.

"Basically from there, I cleared the bench out."

Martin hoped the experience his young players gained against the top team in the league will pay off down the road.

He conceded a schedule change would have been nice rather than a carbon copy of last year.It would have given his team time to get settled and possibly put up a better fight against Gorge later.

"It didn't seem quite right," said Martin.

"He wouldn't even explain it to the guys," Cowichan coach Glen Martin said of the referee's decision."No one got fouled, no one went down."

At the worst, Martin said, a free kick should have been awarded outside the 18-yard box because there was no clear indication the so-called infraction occurred within the penalty area.

"We played pretty good," added Martin.
    ...
Martin tried players in different positions and admitted "we've got a ways to go" before assembling the pieces of his young team into a cohesive unit.

"I thought we had them this time," said Cowichan coach Glen Martin. It was 2-1 for Cowichan heading into the final minutes when "we let in a bit of a lame goal," according to Martin.
