Pat Marshall
[Nov 2004] There is nothing like having a celebrity right in the family!HorizoNews' own staff member, Pat Marshall, was recently honored by her alma mater, Simmons College, which presented her with their Community Service Award. The award is given annually to an alumna who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in community leadership.
The breadth of Pat's commitment to community is impressive. She is a volunteer at "Friends for Life," a program that provides breakfast and lunch three days a week for HIV/AIDS patients at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Fort Lee.In addition, after the death of her husband, Lloyd, who was afflicted with Parkinson's, she founded a weekly exercise and social program in Englewood for people suffering from the disease.Pat also team-teaches an ESL class at a church in Leonia. As if that weren't enough, Pat belongs to a women's writing group and plays Scrabble once a week with a homebound senior citizen!
"My over-riding concern is with groups that tend to be and feel isolated, and getting the individuals, if not back in the mainstream, at least in touch with each other so they can form a social group of their own," Pat says.
Pat received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Simmons College in 1950 and a master's in library and information science from Pratt Institute in 1969.She worked as a literature chemist at Monsanto's Central Labs, which involved researching previously published material relevant to a planned project. After raising three children, Pat returned to work as a business librarian to the petroleum industry and worked for a number of petroleum giants.
Pat and Lloyd moved to Horizon House in 1980 from Flushing, New York when her husband was transferred. She served as a member of our Board of Directors from 1988-1993 and started with HorizoNews at its inception in 1990.Pat remains one of the mainstays of the newsletter, currently contributing as a writer and a member of the Design/Production team of our bi-monthly publication.
