    U.S. Olympic Education Center freestyle resident athletes Helen Maroulis (55kg) and Adeline Gray (67kg) won gold medals and were crowned champions at the USA Wrestling Sr. National Championships held at the Las Vegas Convention Center Thursday April 8, 2009.

    MARQUETTE- United States Olympic Education Center Women's freestyle wrester Helen Maroulis of Rockville, Md., finished eighth in the Fila World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 10-13.

    The U.S. Junior bronze medalist fell short of making the medal round on Saturday.

    At age 17, the Marquette Senior High School senior is the youngest team member in 12 years.

    "I'm glad I had an opportunity to compete with world-class athletes at such a young age," Maroulis said.

    Maroulis won her first match against Roksana Zasina of Poland at 51 kilograms.

    "You have to be mentally strong if you want to go out there and rip your opponent to shreds.And normally, that's what you go out there to do," said Maroulis.

    Max Sartoph, the county's 2005 wrestling coach of the year, has guided Maroulis through her impressive record this season, 25-4 in the 112-pound weight class.

    Maroulis, a member of the 2007 ASICS Girls High School All-American Team, will enter the USOEC resident athlete program as a high school senior and will attend Marquette Senior High School.
