He studied dramatic literature at the University of Tehran, wrote his first narratives in 1976-77 and published his first book of short stories in 1980. Symphony of the Dead (Samfoni-e Mordagan), his first novel, was published in 1989, and transformed him into one of Iran's leading authors. In 1990, he worked in the department of music at the City Hall in Teheran, then founded the journal Gardun. In January 1996, he was sentenced to six month in jail and 20 whiplashes for un-Islamic activities, and the publication and sale of his collected works was prohibited. He left Iran in the spring of 1996, and has since then lived in Germany.
