With Dr. Robin Marles, Ethnobotanist and wild plants researcher
With Dr. Robin Marles, ethnobotanist and wild plants researcher A day in the field with Dr. Robin Marles is a day of discovery. This is not field school, nor is it a lecture! This is a day in which you will encounter Robin's wonderful and easy style of sharing over 20 years of research on the traditional uses, chemistry, pharmacology, and sustainable production of medicinal and edible plants of the aspen parkland and boreal forests of northwestern Canada.
Prepare to hike, learn to identify some common plants and their traditional uses, and ask lots of questions.Robin teaches at Brandon University. He is on the Complementary and Alternative Medicine / Natural Health Products and Pediatrics Steering Committee of the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children Foundation. He also provides expert advice for Health Canada's Natural Health Products Directorate and their External Working Group on Health Promotion.
His passion for nature and how it nurtures us is best summarized in his own words, "We live in a dynamic interrelationship with the natural world around us.Any ecosystem can provide foods that nourish us and help us stay healthy, medicines to treat us when we do become ill, and materials for clothing, shelter, and the other necessities of life. However, that can only happen if we take responsibility for keeping our environment healthy.Learning about our relationship with nature is a key step in that life-long commitment."
Includes: Half-day with ethnobotanist Robin Marles in the Riding Mountain International Biosphere Reserve and Riding Mountain National Park; identification of signature wild plants of the aspen parkland and boreal forests which have traditional food, medicinal or even new uses; hands-on learning and interaction with ecosystems and wild plants.Hiking, walking, and travel by van is involved.
