The son of the late Mary and Moses Markowitz of Woodridge, he was born December 24, 1924 in West New York, NJ.He was brought up in Woodridge and graduated from Woodridge High School. He was a civil engineer who for 41 years was a central figure in development of billions of dollars of U.S. Air Force military construction programs for weapons systems, research and development, communications, intelligence and improvement of the quality of life of military personnel.A resident of the Washington, D.C. area for 57 years, the last 50 in Silver Spring, Md., Mr. Markowitz retired in 1994 after 45 years of Federal service, most which was as a civilian with the Air Force.Some of the programs he worked on were Defense Warning and Communications Systems, Strategic Air Command Dispersal, United States Air Force Academy, NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex, Rocket Test Facilities, Space Shuttle, Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, construction in Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, and Desert Storm, as well as airmen dormitory modernization, major hospital construction and correction of environmental hazards.He was a recognized expert in legislation and in the intricate laws and regulations governing military construction in the Dept. of Defense.He helped teach and train many young officers in construction development and received many awards including the Air Force Awards for Meritorious and Outstanding Civilian Service.At his retirement he was Chief of Programs Division, Directorate of Civil Engineering, The Pentagon, Washington, D.C.He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and graduated as a civil engineer from Clarkson College in 1947.He was a registered professional engineer, a member of the Society of American Military Engineers and a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.He was a volunteer with Jewish Vocational Services, a member of the Argo Lodge of B'nai Brith, the World Jewish Congress, and a charter member of the US Holocaust Museum.
