"It's just important that people remember," said Genya Markon, a curator at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, who is helping Schwarz in his efforts to gather names and stories."The survivors are becoming fewer and fewer, and I have a feeling this will really be the last hurrah for the Exodus."

Markon, who had a cousin on the Exodus, says that she also hopes to obtain original documentation, photos and artifacts for the museum's collection.Markon has been in touch with Helen Lepor, Jacob's daughter, about Jacob's story.

"We piggybacked onto the project," said Genya Markon, a curator at the museum."It is a way of expanding the context of the museum.It fits our mandate."

The museum has received artifacts in the form of photos and original documents.Ms. Markon said one of the focuses of the project is to educate young Israelis about a part of their history, since many of them do not know what a pivotal role the Exodus played in the creation of Israel.

Genya Markon, chief of the Photo Archives for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, which received copies of the photographs from the Polish Historical Society as well as an earlier set from the Bildarchive Preussischer Kulturbezitz in Berlin, disputes the contention that the women were collaborators of the NKVD or prostitutes.

"According to our information that is not correct," she told Ukrainian News.

Markon says that the earlier information stated the photographs depicted a "pogrom in the city of Lvov, 1941."

She admits that it is impossible to conclusively identify the nationality of the women in question, but "we definitely think that they are Jews."

Markon, however, agrees that TIME's caption was "totally incorrect."

"I don't think that this girl is being raped.Nobody is being raped.They're being beaten," she says.
