PITTSBURGH, PA - June 19, 2000 - Calgon Carbon Corporation announced today that Robert P. (Rick) Markle, age 49, has accepted the newly created position of senior vice president, sales.He has also been elected an officer of the company.Effective July 1, Mr. Markle will have responsibility to lead efforts to profitably grow Calgon Carbon's worldwide sales.
Mr. Markle has extensive experience in sales, marketing, technical support, customer service, and business development in the specialty chemicals and water industries.He began his career in 1973 with Betz Laboratories, Inc., a producer of specialty chemicals for water treatment, as a technical sales and service engineer and held positions of increasing responsibility over the next 23 years.In his last position at Betz as vice president, sales, Mr. Markle headed a multi-million dollar division in the U.S. and the Caribbean.In addition to sales and marketing leadership, he was responsible for strategic planning, staffing, and budgeting.
From 1996 to 1999, Mr. Markle was vice president-Americas at Calgon Corporation, a manufacturer of industrial water treatment chemicals now owned by Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux.In that position, he was responsible for multi-million dollar sales and 350 sales, marketing, and technical/customer support employees.During his tenure, he led sales reorganization efforts that resulted in significant sales growth.
During the past year, Mr. Markle has served as vice president of business development for Pittsburgh-based Columbia/CGI Gases, a joint venture to market hydrogen production and carbon dioxide recovery to the petroleum refining and petrochemical industries.
Mr. Markle holds a B.S. in environmental engineering from Western Kentucky University.
A native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Mr. Markle, his wife Teresa and their teenage son Wilson reside in McMurray, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
