A scholarship has been established to honour the memory of Robert Markle, artist and teacher (1936-1990).It is to be awarded annually to a First Nations student in the first or later year of a visual arts program at a post-secondary institution.

As artist and teacher, Robert Markle demanded of his students that they be curious, industrious, and intellectually open to all activities - literature, music, dance, philosophy, politics, athletics, etc. - as well as the visual arts. The results of his inspiration can be found in a generation of younger artists who, in their turn, are influencing the Canadian art scene.

Robert Markle understood very well the need students have for financial support and, as a member of the Mohawk nation intensely interested in his heritage, realized how much more difficult it can be for a First Nations person to study art after high school.

The Robert Markle Scholarship is administered by the Robert Markle Fund, c/o the Woodland Cultural Centre

The exhibit will feature quilts made in Dufferin County that helped the settlers keep warm, and the diverse collection of whirligigs collected by artist Robert Markle and his wife Marlene, and donated in 2004 to the museum.
