It was in September 2004 that Lima and his IT consultant, David Mark, traveled to Uganda to improve ICTs at the Masaka-MRC vaccine trial site and its field site, Kyamulibwa. Both sites are located within 15 miles of each other and approximately three hours from Entebbe.
Lima and Mark place special importance on incorporating the participation of local experts in the various ICT projects, which aids in developing and strengthening the relationship between IAVI and its partners.According to Mark, these participatory planning processes "give local stakeholders a sense of ownership in the project, especially since the devastating impact of AIDS is most pronounced in their communities."For this particular project, Lima and Mark worked with Andrew Muluubya, the IT/Data Manager for UVRI, in addition to Edward Ssennyonjo of the MRC.
