Professor Manley is the foremost representative of the field of comparative auditory science, having published work on amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. These include comparative studies of the anatomy and physiology of the middle and inner ears and of the brainstem auditory centres. He has pioneered the use of comparative research to understand the evolution of structure and function in the inner-ears of mammals and their relatives. His studies have also provided a basis for understanding structure-function relationships in all hearing organs and for recognizing features of auditory inner ears that are unique to mammals and humans.

Professor Manley is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology and on the editorial board of Hearing Research and Audiology and Neuro-Otology.He is the author of the Monograph Peripheral Hearing Mechanisms in Reptiles and Birds (1990) and senior editor of the conference volume Advances in Hearing Research (1995), the research report Auditory Worlds: Sensory Analysis and Perception in Animals and Man (2000) and the forthcoming Evolution of the Vertebrate Auditory system.Since 1970, Professor Manley has also been the author of 112 peer-reviewed papers in international scientific journals including Nature, Science and PNAS.
