George Majors, president of the Wasatch Front Table Tennis Club, has been Utah State Champion 15 times and won the Open Championship in the Utah Summer Games eight times. But he doesn't play for the awards."That never mattered to me. It's about the thrill of the moment," he says.Majors played the tournament circuit for years, traveling 50,000 miles annually across the country since he won his first tournament in 1972.At the top of his game he replaced the rubber on his racquets (at $60 a pop) every two weeks. What Majors started in 1976 as an LDS church athletic program soon expanded to a serious club.On Friday nights club members (and walk-ins) square off, fingers twitching, to slice balls through the air and burn some rubber. While there isn't a formal structure, the club offers periodic clinics where people can learn correct strokes and techniques, and several tournaments and leagues are held throughout the year."Our club is the best place in the state where you can improve your game," says Majors.
