   EMC's Dushy Mahendran directs hardware engineering Although they've never worked together, Arcari and Dushy Mahendran, EMC's director of hardware engineering, have followed parallel career paths.

   Mahendran graduated from MIT in 1988 with a BSEE. She, too, worked at Prime Computer, where she was a hardware engineer doing ASIC design. In 1991 she took a similar job in Data General's Aviion server division.
   
   In 1999 EMC acquired Data General, and the next year she moved to EMC's new Symmetrix engineering organization. Last year she became director of hardware engineering, responsible for new development. Currently on the boards is an advanced system aimed at greatly increasing the performance of applications.
   
   Part of the group's work involves meeting with customers to understand their storage needs, then researching any required improvements. "It's very satisfying," she says. "If I don't feel I'm contributing to the bottom line I don't feel any excitement."
