Deborah Mahany, Lake Mary's director of guidance, explains why SAT scores and GPAs are just as important as points-per-game and yards-per-carry in college sports.
"Because of the current political and social climates," she says, "the colleges are under a microscope. They are definitely looking for students who will complete the four year degrees that [the schools] are offering."
The NCAA requires a certain combination of SAT/ACT scores and grade-point-average to qualify for athletic participation and scholarships. For example, a student with a 2.0 GPA must score a 1010 or better on the SAT and 86 or better on the ACT to play college sports at a Division I school. If the GPA is higher, test score requirements are lower. Deborah is proud to report all 20 student athletes not only met but exceeded those requirements. -

Debbie Mahany, lead guidance counselor at Lake Mary High in Seminole County, worries that middle-of-the-road students could end up leaving school clueless about what they want to do in the real world.
"Other than taking minimum-wage jobs, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves," Mahany said.
