Maureen Maguire, Ph.D. will serve as the Principal Investigator of the CUTS Fundus Photograph Reading Center based in the Center for Preventive Ophthalmology and Biostatistics, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Pennsylvania.Dr. Maguire's primary appointment is Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and her secondary appointment is in the Department of Biostatistics and Clinical Epidemiology.

Dr. Maguire has been involved in clinical research in ophthalmology for more than 20 years, first at the Wilmer Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and then at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a recognized leader in the field of clinical trials in ophthalmology as evidenced by her membership on the Editorial Board of Ophthalmology, her leadership of the ARVO Saturday Course on clinical trials (2000, 2002); and her invited speaking engagements for courses and seminars addressing issues in clinical trials.Although her formal academic training is in biostatistics, her professional activities have provided a strong background for identifying and prioritizing the activities of a photograph reading center in responding to the needs of a particular clinical trial.Soon after beginning her work at Wilmer, Dr. Maguire participated in the Coordinating Center and Photograph Reading Center for the Branch Vein Occlusion Study.Throughout her years with the Coordinating Center for the Macular Photocoagulation Study (MPS) she worked closely with the MPS Photograph Reading Center in developing new procedures and forms for exploring features of choroidal neovascularization and possible prognostic factors for development of neovascular disease or for response to thermal laser treatment. After arriving at the University of Pennsylvania, she actively provided guidance to first Allen Ho, MD as Principal Investigator of the Photograph Reading Center for the Choroidal Neovascularization Prevention Trial and to Jeffrey Berger, MD as Principal Investigator of the Fundus Photograph Reading Center for the Complications of Age-related Macular Degeneration Prevention Trial. Her experience with the fundus features important in vein occlusion was refined further by her participation on the Data and Safety Monitoring Committee for the Central Vein Occlusion Study.
