That's the message from John Maguire, Sales and Marketing Director of Narrow Aisle Flexi, whose G4 electric VNA counterbalance truck is Europe's most popular articulated forklift.
    ...
"When articulated forklifts were first introduced they were offered as an effective alternative to VNA trucks," says John Maguire. "But we believe modern warehouse designers and some forklift truck manufacturers now place too much emphasis on achieving the narrowest aisleways and, as a result, safety and productivity can be compromised.

"Although I'd be the first to acknowledge that the accepted wisdom about restricting aisle widths has benefited articulated forklift truck sales, narrowing aisles has become an obsession," John continues.
    ...
John Maguire continues: "The regulation width for reach truck aisles is 2.7m, but no-one would design a storage system around 2.7m wide aisles because trucks would be forced to operate too slowly.

But extra pallet locations account for very little if aisle widths have to be reduced to the extent that forklift truck travel speeds and, therefore, efficient throughputs are sacrificed, says John Maguire , sales and marketing director of Narrow Aisle Flexi

"When articulated forklifts were first introduced they were offered to the market as an effective alternative to VNA trucks," says John Maguire, sales and marketing director of Narrow Aisle Flexi - whose G4 electric VNA counterbalance truck is the most popular articulated forklift in Europe.

But, John Maguire believes that modern warehouse designers and some forklift truck manufacturers now place too much emphasis on achieving the narrowest aisleways and, as a result, safety and productivity can be compromised.

"Although I would be the first to acknowledge that the accepted wisdom when it comes to restricting aisle widths has certainly benefited articulated forklift truck sales, narrowing the aisles has become something of an obsession," he says.

"Of course, companies like my own must take some of the responsibility for this; after all, we've been stressing the benefits of keeping aisle widths to a minimum for many years.

"In attempting to squeeze the highest number of racking runs into any given storage cube many companies are in danger of adversely affecting the efficiency and productivity of their forklift fleet.

John Maguire continues: "Quite simply, narrowing the aisleways restricts the speeds at which a forklift can travel between picking locations.
    ...
"However," says John Maguire, "the most important dimensions when assessing the ideal aisle width for any operation involving articulated trucks to conform to GN9 is the distance diagonally across the pallet, ie, from one corner to another when a pallet is being rotated in the aisle. Safety clearance of 100mm either side (200mm in total) of a typical pallet will need to be added to ensure safe pallet put-away and retrieval. Flexi articulated trucks can operate in aisles as narrow as 1.8 metres, but in applications where a high throughput is required and where 1200mm deep Euro pallets are being stored, I would always say that the optimum aisle width is two metres. It is certainly worth remembering when designing any storage system that the use of Euro pallets is growing in the UK and increasingly companies need to plan for handling them as well as a traditional pallets."

John Maguire continues: "The regulation width for reach truck aisles is 2.7 metres wide but no one would design a storage system around 2.7 metre wide aisles because the trucks would be forced to operate too slowly.

So says John Maguire, Narrow Aisle's sales and marketing director.

'There is a discernible trend in the mechanics of customer order picking,' he explains, 'with more demand for smaller volumes of outers per SKU more frequently - which leads to more SKUs per pick list.'

He adds: 'Everyone - particularly retailers - wants less inventory in store, so the amount of break-bulk and ground level picking of single items within RDCs is growing fast.

Narrow Aisle's sales and marketing director, John Maguire, commented: "Operator safety is a key consideration within any materials handling operation and with forklift trucks implicated in around one-quarter of all serious workplace transport-related injuries and some ten fatalities a year, it's easy to understand why.

The forklift truck industry was one of the earliest sectors to feel the effects of the economic downturn but could be one of the first to emerge from the recession, says John Maguire of Narrow Aisle.

With fiscal prudence uppermost on the agenda within every boardroom, John Maguire, sales and marketing director of Narrow Aisle Flexi - manufacturer of the Flexi range of articulated trucks - says that in the current climate it is particularly important that companies considering investing in fork lift trucks choose models with the best value "from cradle to grave". In other words, trucks that are able to command a good resale value when they reach the end of their first, second or third life.

"When it comes to the purchasing decision, a truck's residual value - or RV - should be considered from the outset, particularly if the user is considering entering a lease rental package with its supplier," John Maguire explains.
    ...
"I think far too many dealers in the UK have in the past ended up having to 'dispose' of more specialist trucks that come back to them at the end of a lease - they do know the potential income that a truck with a high RV can generate, but they often do not consider this at the time of purchase," says John Maguire.

Over the last five or so years, a thriving market for used Flexi trucks has developed, as John Maguire explains, "We have built up an efficient spare parts operation, which means that Flexis are very cost effective to refurbish. Thanks to their inherent high build quality, Flexis are straightforward to maintain and our distributors are able to make healthy margins on used Flexis that they put back into the market on contract hire with maintenance packages.

"Such is the demand for used Flexis - both from users and within the 'trade' - that the resale value of a five-year-old Flexi truck in the European market is often over twice that of, say, US or French-built alternatives.

"Typically, a used and refurbished Flexi will be sold for in the region of 65% of its price when new," says John Maguire, who likens the Flexi brand's high resale value to that of classic sports cars - which are worth almost as much restored as they are when new.

John Maguire believes that, like their counterparts in the automotive sector, those fork lift truck dealers that cannot generate enough margin on used equipment resales to pay off the guaranteed RV in customer contract hire agreements will struggle in the current climate.

"We have sold more than 4,000 Flexi trucks through independent distributors worldwide and, in part, our continued success is due to the fact that our distributor partners realise that they can rely on the Flexi to achieve a good market value at the end of its first life," he concludes.
