Jim Maguire, president of the Douglas County Deputies Union, said that when the memorial is finished, family and friends will be able to visit it and touch the names of their loved ones.

"Hopefully, someday (the memorial) will be a calming influence on them," Maguire said.

The memorial was conceived about a year and a half ago.The department has raised about half of the necessary funds.

To raise more money for the memorial, the Sheriff's Office will host a fundraising concert June 14 at the Anchor Inn, 2499 Freedom Park Road.The concert will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is $10.

"This is an expensive project, but it is going to be first-class," Maguire said.

That's not enough, and it's inconsistent with other statutes, said Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Jim Maguire.

Maguire noted that state law requires a one- to 15-year license revocation for drivers involved in injury or fatal accidents who fail to stop, report and render aid.

He said deputies did not consider pushing the Legislature for more prison time for felony motor vehicle homicide-reckless driving.

"It's never been about how long a person goes to jail," Maguire said.

Jim Maguire, president of Douglas County's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 2, said neighborhoods shouldn't have to resort to private security.

"They pay enough in property taxes, they should expect a deputy to go through," said Maguire, whose union supports Democratic sheriff candidate Sam Christiansen.

Deputy Jim Maguire, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 2, said deputies with more than four years of experience will now be able to bid on working at the Courthouse or on patrol.

"People just wanted to have a say in where their career goes," Maguire said.

One reason for the change, he said, is that some deputies have trouble taking classes if they work irregular patrol hours.Courthouse duty is during the day.
