Adele MacPherson, superintendent of community services for the city of Santa Clarita's parks and recreation department, said that the city's disaster planning efforts are enhanced by the maps, which were created shortly after the fires ended.

"With the new GPS technology it is so easy for the USGS to make these maps," MacPherson."After the fires, teams went out to all fire areas and did their surveys. They are a very, very valuable tool for emergency responders."

Although Santa Clarita has far fewer at-risk areas than other fire-ravaged parts of southern California, 50 homes were identified that fall within areas where there is the potential for landslides, according to MacPherson.

The city has contacted all the homeowners in the affected areas and given them each a plan for how to protect their property in the event of a mudslide.Sand bags are also available at the fire station.

"Compared to San Diego, we are so lucky," MacPherson said."We don't have a lot of areas where there are homes at risk, but there is some potential for mudslides if there is a substantial rainfall."

"It's important for people who live in those areas to be vigilant should it start to rain heavily, and follow the instructions of the fire department and the city," she added.
