    Former Provost Alistair Macdonald and ex-Councillor Margaret McGregor have been honoured by being admitted as Honorary Freemen in recognition of their contributions locally.

    In 1980, he was elected to Clydebank District Council.He was elected to West Dunbartonshire Council and has completed over 26 years continuous service.

    During that period he has consistently been returned with the highest majority throughout the constituency.

    His contribution to relations with Poland and involvement with the Polish ex-servicemen's organisations has been officially recognised.

    Mr Macdonald has on four occasions over the past five years been Honorary Chieftain of the Scottish Pipe Band Championships.

    And this week, after 27 years of service as a councillor, Provost Alistair Macdonald says a final goodbye to politics.

    Throughout an illustrious career his dedication to local government has seen him honoured with an MBE and most recently, the Freeman of West Dunbartonshire.

    But politics were not at the forefront of his mind when he joined Clydebank Police as a newly-married man.

    Former Provost Alistair Macdonald told the Post when the proposals originally came up he persuaded the council to agree a new facility would be built for the club before it was razed.

    Mr Macdonald, an honorary member of the club, said: "I told the Boilermaker members don't agree to anything until you get a guarantee for a new club to be built - that was received and a new club was to be built behind the snooker club.

    Clydeside Regeneration Ltd bought the land where the Boilermakers stands and Mr Macdonald called on the company to help preserve a part of the area's history.

    He added: "When this gets pulled down a part of Clydebank's history will longer exist.

    Alistair Macdonald, Deputy Lord Lieutenant and former Provost, recalls how the closure of the Singer factory was devastating to the town. He said: "In the 1980s the town was in turmoil with the closure of Singer, which had a domino effect on smaller businesses.

    But Mr Macdonald said the people who left in the search for jobs and success still hold the town close to their hearts.

    He told the Post: "I've met many ex-pats in their new homes abroad, and no matter how many years have passed, the warmth and love that Bankies have for their home town is still there.
