D.A. MacPherson, Inc. was founded in 1954 by David A. MacPherson.Mr. MacPherson graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1936 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for such large companies as General Motors and Nordberg Manufacturing in design engineering of large diesel engines. His desire was to return back home to Iron River, Michigan and he decided to go into business for himself. He worked out of his own home selling such products as Esco earth moving products, Gardner-Denver construction equipment, D-A Lubricants, Lincoln lube equipment and Unit cranes and shovels. As a "one man" operation and basically a traveling salesman, he promoted these product lines to the open pit mines and quarries throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He also served the construction and logging industries.
In 1958, David MacPherson saw an opportunity at the White Pine Copper Company mine located in Ontonagon County (Western U.P.).This mine was making a changeover in all of it's underground mining fleet to the Deutz air-cooled diesel engines.David MacPherson signed on with Deutz Energy Corporation as a distributor to provide parts and service to the White Pine fleet that eventually grew to 350 pieces of equipment powered by Deutz air-cooled engines. This helped to establish D.A. MacPherson, Inc. as one of the largest rebuilders of Deutz engines in North America.Through various expansions, MacPherson found the need to get his entire operation under one roof.In 1973 MacPherson's moved their entire operations in to what was formerly known as the Homer-Wauseca Mine. This provided approximately 60,000 square feet of space to house the operations of the company.
David MacPherson passed away in 1983 and his son John MacPherson took over as President.
