Egbert Maas, the former mayor who assembled the land, saw his vision for the city slipping away and organized opposition around the loss of the civic center and the proposed demolition of several perfectly good public buildings.

Egbert Maas, boundary review board member and former mayor of Lynden, said he didn't agree with the way Fleetwood handled the situation."I don't like that tactic," he said of rescinding the urban growth area status to thwart the process."I'd rather address the issue than come around and corner them that way."Maas said the board has an "obligation" to consider the petition if the signatures are verified."It's not saying I'm in favor or against (incorporation of Sudden Valley)," he added.
