Laurence Lyon retired in 1997 after 30 years as a professor of music at Western Oregon University in Monmouth , Oregon.His specialties were : Musicianship , Composition , Piano , Violin Pedagogy and Music Literature.He has B.S. and M.A. degrees in music from the University of Utah , with a Ph.D. in Theory and Composition from Eastman School of Music.He is the winner of the ASCAP ( a national music licensing agency out of New York , N.Y. ) Standard Music Award in Composition each year since 1986.Laurence served on the LDS Church Music General Board : 1985-93 , taught classes in theory and composition as a guest lecturer in 1993 & 1998 at the BYU Summer Church Music Workshop , Provo , Utah. and taught various classes , including Arranging , Writing Accompaniments , Creativity in Music , Music in Comic Relief ( 2001 ) , Writing for Voices , Priesthood Involvement in Music Administration , Question and Answer Session for Ward and Stake Music Chairmen and similar courses in at the Portland , Ore. Regional Workshop since its inception in the 1980's.Laurence conducted choruses for dedication services at the Bern ( Switzerland ) , Seattle ( Washington ) and Portland ( Oregon ) , temples and had over 100 choral works performed on the weekly CBS broadcasts of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir since 1975.He had his sacred compositions recorded on 14 CDs ( currently available ) and has been frequent composition judge for LDS Church Composition Entries.He served an LDS Church mission to the Netherlands from 1954-57 and served another mission with his wife , Donna , to Chile , S.A. , in 1999 , teaching the LDS Church keyboard course to Church members in Osorno , Chile.Laurence served three times as a bishop's counselor , and three times as a stake high councilor.
