I wish I knew more," said new interim head coach Carrie Lundy, the only assistant on the volleyball staff.
...
Players were not made available to the media after the practice ended at 7 p.m., but Lundy calmly addressed reporters.
"They were great," Lundy said.
...
Lundy, who also was involved in the complaint, accepted the job as interim head coach Monday afternoon, not long after the Flood-led practice ended at 5 p.m.
McAloose said Lundy will continue in her current capacity until an external investigation into Flood is completed.
...
Lundy said McAloose told her that should be within "two days to two weeks."
...
"I expect Jaye to walk through the door at any moment, and it's going to be fine," Lundy said."(The players) are fired up."
Lundy said it was a difficult decision to accept the interim job.
"Yeah, because it's a unique situation," she said.
...
Carrie was understanding.I said I would like for her to take over the volleyball team. She said, 'Do you want me to do that?' I said, 'Absolutely.I have all the confidence in the world in you.'
"I have in the past advised other people to hire Carrie as a head coach.I have all the confidence in the world in her as a head coach.I don't think this will slow our momentum at all for our team. And I think that's the key for this thing.I would feel much different if I didn't have confidence in Carrie, but I do."
Lundy did not meet with Flood before McAloose offered her the interim position.
...
"Neither of us had any idea this was coming, so, no, we had no conversations on it," Lundy said.
They talked Monday night.
"No conversations about the situation," Lundy said."I called to offer her my support."
She declined to generalize on Flood's demeanor.
This is Lundy's third season after coming to FGCU from Truman State, where she was an assistant for two seasons for teams that went 68-6 and to two D-II NCAA Tournaments.Prior to that, Lundy was at Ashland as an assistant volleyball coach for four seasons. She played at Lincoln Memorial University from 1993-96 and still holds the schools blocks record (741).She was named All-Gulf South Conference in 1995.
Ironically, Lundy became the head golf coach at Ashland because of a similar issue. She served in that capacity for three seasons.
"You try and maintain normalcy," Lundy said.
Flood's overall FGCU record is 96-19, making her the coach with the highest winning percentage on campus. Her teams went to three consecutive D-II NCAA Tournaments, making the South Region final last season.
...
"That's the part that is so shocking to everyone is we've been so successful and now this, out of the blue," Lundy said.
...
Said Lundy: "Jaye cares more about her athletes than anybody I've ever worked for."
