The National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) has named Paul Lumley, a senior Natural and Cultural Resources Policy expert with the federal government, and enrolled member of the Yakama Nation (Washington State), as Executive Director, according to Board Chairman Marty Shuravloff.

Lumley will begin his duties at NAIHC on January 29.
"Mr. Lumley brings to NAIHC a wide-ranging background on issues that directly impact American Indians and Alaska Natives, and will provide the kind of strong leadership and decisive managerial skills required to lead a national Indian organization," said Shuravloff, who is Executive Director of Kodiak Island Housing Authority, Alaska.

Lumley has worked directly with tribal governments, tribal consortia, and virtually all federal agencies impacting Indian Country, and Native American national and regional organizations during his career."
NAIHC: Oldest, Largest Indian Housing Organization
Lumley, as NAIHC's new Executive Director, will be responsible for overall organizational operations, including advocacy, staff hiring/management, training and technical assistance programs, and budget oversight.In addition, Lumley will represent NAIHC at national, regional, and local meetings of tribes and tribal organizations, and other forums, to advance housing development in Indian Country.
"In my professional career, as well as privately, I have always worked toward improving the lives of Native Americans," said Lumley."I look forward to this new challenge of helping improve the lives of Native Americans where they live; on reservations, in Indian communities and in Alaska Native villages."
Lumley: Senior Natural and Cultural Resources Policy Expert
Since July 2004, Lumley has been the Senior Tribal Liaison within the Office of the Deputy Undersecretary for the Department of Defense's (DoD) Installations and Environment Program.In that capacity, he has been responsible for the Native American Lands Environmental Mitigation Program as well as working on numerous policy issues affecting Native American and Alaska Natives.In addition, Lumley has an extensive history working with Northwest Tribes on salmon issues, particularly in the Columbia River Basin.He spent 17 years with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission before transferring to the DoD.Lumley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Western Washington University (1986).
Critical Time for NAIHC
According to Shuravoloff, Lumley is joining NAIHC at a critical time."Because one of our top priorities in 2007 is the reauthorization of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self- Determination Act, Paul will be articulating to Congress, our federal funders and other nongovernmental organizations, the importance of capacity building for our membership and the necessary funding to support housing and community development in American Indian and Alaska Native communities."
