Portfolio Manager: John Lui (eight years)

Many fund managers, like many bank reps, are getting back to basics in these tough times.Others never strayed far from fundamentals in the first place.John Lui certainly did not stray, literally or figuratively.

Not too long ago, a small-cap growth fund could have a turnover of several hundred percent without raising an eyebrow. But that is not Lui's style."Last year our turnover was 25%," he says, "which has been our average for the past three years. Our highest turnover ever was 82%, and that was valuation driven selling in 1999."He declines to claim that he called the top, preferring to say that it was clear from the hard numbers that many of his holdings were way overvalued."Quarterly trading is not investing," he says."We prefer to look at the five-year business cycle.'

However successful Lui and his managers have been, it is only recently that their fund, and indeed all of BoNY's Hamilton funds, have been distributed widely.
    ...
Lui also focuses on outperformance in down markets, usually the Achilles' heel for all growth funds, but especially from the small-cap funds.
