John Lucht has been a recruiter for 30 years and has been writing executive guides for nearly as long. You need to get this edition as he has thoroughly updated his material to explain rules, procedures, and protocols for job-hunting on the Internet.

I was an unemployed executive for nearly a year before landing my current position and Lucht's book is the roadmap for any similar journey. He has insightful sections on resumes, cover letters, severance negotiations, outplacement, networking, references, as well as the better known how-to-guide for dealing with all stripes of recruiters.

Don't get hung-up on the title. While Lucht is most familiar with recruiting at the C-level, most of this applies equally well for managers, directors, and experienced professionals. The only criticism I have is that Lucht is focused on job-hunting in strong markets, and needs more analysis of today's humbling markets. He is fairly critical of the typical outplacement service that considers it a success when they place laid-off software executives as owner-operators of ice cream parlors and coffee shops and franchisees of muffler and transmission repair stores.

Lucht also thoughtfully debunks a lot of media myths about finding work without a resume or a network. His promotion of direct mail as a marketing tool sounds old-fashioned but it works if you understand that less than 1% of your mail will yield leads, but these are likely leads that would not have been otherwise obtained. Lucht also has built a useful website and avoids the high fees and endless cross-promotions that his competitors favor.

John Lucht walks the reader step-by-step through all of the activities required to successfully find a new job and shatters a lot of myths along the way. Like many others, I have been promoted several times within my own company so the last time I actively searched for a job, I was making about 1/4 the salary that I do now. Although I thought I knew everything I needed to know to search for a new job, this book made it clear how wrong I was. What really impressed me is that as much focus is placed on discussing your possible weaknesses as is placed on strengths. At this salary range, you need to anticipate everything that a prospective employer might hold aganst you. Mr. Lucht goes through all of these (even being overweight) and offers indispensable advice on how to deal with each.
    ...
Less theoretical than most, Lucht provides a clear plan for how to change jobs.

Lucht knows his stuff, and anyone looking to change jobs will benefit from his extremely objective suggestions and insight into recruitment.
    ...
In close to 600 pages that are much denser than most business and self-help books, John Lucht doles out a thorough treatment of every topic you'd expect to see, and then some.

Lucht's description of the executive recruitment business is espeicially illuminating - I would have distributed my resume far too freely if I hadn't read this book. Several chapters are dedicated to finding recruiters, separating the good from the bad, and recruiter interactions.

Of course, there is also plenty of networking, interviewing, and resume-writing advice. It seems that Lucht approached this book as if writing his own resume: it's jam-packed with facts, and doesn't mince words; it has a flowing narrative style punctuated by headlines for easy scanning; it touts his credibility, accomplishments, and recruiting services without inflated, ambiguous adjectives.

It's not perfect, though. Lucht overhypes the subscription services on his Web site, ritesite.com. He repeats certain points mind-numbingly often. He suggests that people include marital status, height, and weight on resumes; as a small, single woman, I doubted that. Some of his internet job search suggestions are already outdated, and his preference of old-fashioned direct mail is questionable for technology industry jobs. But given his vast experience, his opinions are certainly valid. And most of his suggestions are painstakingly justified by facts and examples.

There are an innumerable number of sentences that begin with 'But' and 'And' which makes me wonder if his editors are family friends afraid to correct Mr. Lucht. It appears that the text relied heavily on notes taken down on pieces of scrap paper over the years as sentence fragments and grammatical errors are the norm. Sarchastic examples are commonplace. Mr. Lucht also manages to blow his own horn approximately ten times throughout the book when referring to his '26' years in the 'retainer recruiting' business. Once you adjust your reading style to his disaterous form, the content of the book begins to give some worthwhile advice.
    ...
Also, Mr. Lucht makes sure that his self promotion is woven throughout the book.

John Lucht, who operates RiteSite (ritesite.com), the excellent fee-based Web job service for executives and managers, recently studied the status of under-the-radar online resumes posted in Ritesite's identity-concealed database.Lucht found that nearly one fourth of all people who think they're keeping their resume under wraps aren't.
    ...
Lucht says that some posters in his RiteSite identity-concealed database purposely leave their name and contact data boldly displayed on top, thinking that if they're unemployed, they have nothing to hide.Or, they believe that more headhunters will grab them if they're easier to contact."That may be true," Lucht admits, but he adds this caveat:

"The recruiters they attract may be the ones they should avoid -- those who vacuum up loose resumes and scatter them everywhere. It is not in your best interest to become the commodity product of the worst recruiters. Moreover, there's always an outside chance of even worse things happening -- from getting swamped with spam to being a clear target for identity theft crimes."

Actually, Lucht says, getting your resume into an identity-concealed databases should only be your number three priority.

MOST IMPORTANT DATABASE.Your first priority is getting your resume into a recruiter's own database, the expert advises. That's the first place a recruiter will look.If a recruiter finds enough candidates there, he or she won't visit an outside database -- RiteSite's or any other.

Of course, you'll be sure not to place your undisguised information into the hands of any search firm you don't know.

SECOND MOVE.Your second priority is to put yourself into RiteSite's identity-revealed database, which can be seen only by 500 leading firms that Lucht, a former top executive recruiter himself, has screened. These are the firms that he terms "Rites-Honored recruiters."
