The Peak will play a mix of well-known rock tracks from the 1970s, '80s and '90s along with current hits, said Brett Lucht, central Wisconsin market manager for Midwest Communications Inc.He said the station's core playlist will come from the 1980s and that The Peak will have a much more extensive play list than other Midwest Communications stations.
The change doesn't mean the hip-hop format is hopeless in Wausau, he said.On the contrary, the station built a dedicated audience but didn't receive the type of community response Midwest Communications' other stations receive, he said.
The others, like WIFC-FM (95.5) and WSAU-AM (550), partner with nonprofits and other community groups for different events.Management found those groups weren't as comfortable being connected to hip-hop music.
"It just didn't have the mass appeal. You want to have a format that has a broad mass appeal," which management thinks The Peak will have, Lucht said.

Over the next few months, on-air voices will emerge, but don't expect them to talk much, Lucht said.
According to research the company has done, listeners want to hear the names of the songs and the artists playing. That's about all you'll hear from the new DJs, he said.
"I don't think this means that a hip-hop station won't come back (to Wausau)," Lucht said.
