Five-star private psychiatric hospitals such as Behman Psychiatric Hospital in Helwan and Moqattam Hospital serve a high-class, westernized clientele. (They also, according to some, do a steady business in involuntary dry-out rehab for young addicts from well-to-do families.) "There's so much more offered in private [psychiatry]--better support staff, different medicinal options, better equipment and facilities," says Behman's director Dr. Nasser Loza.
At the very least, the atmosphere is more soothing. In contrast to the stark, dusty hills around the facility, the Behman complex feels like a sleepy country club.Paved, landscaped lanes lead to patients' bungalows, with signs pointing the way to the swimming pool and tennis courts.Such high-class touches are far more than just a luxurious conceit, Loza says."Occupational therapy is vital. The last thing you want to do to a psychiatric patient is keep them in a room for weeks," he says.
