    Sarah Long, Poplar Bluff R-1 Schools assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said similar teen parent programs have been run in Kansas City area for several years which has seen a substantial decrease in child abuse by young parents.

    " A total of $1,508,728 was awarded in grant money in 2003 to agencies to develop projects that will prevent child abuse," Long said.

    Some of the projects the money has helped fund in Southeast Missouri include, $10,222.00 to Bollinger County Health Center for their Safe Crib Project; $31,641.00 to Whole Kids Outreach in Ellington for their Resource Mothers Program and $28,723.00 to Pemiscot County Initiative Network in Caruthersville for their Children Safe in Their Families program.

    Long said their were two infant deaths in Butler County in 2002 due to shaken baby syndrome.She said the whole focus of CTF is to prevent child abuse.

    According to Sarah Long, assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum, since that teaching position was cut, the school has heard no complaints from parents or students.She said that although SINGS students now receive about one hour less per week with a SINGS teacher, the class size didn't dramatically increase.
