    PALO PINTO - Holding back tearful emotions at Palo Pinto County Commissioner's Court on Monday, Tax Assessor-Collector Sandra Long submitted her resignation.

    Long, who started her tenure as tax collector in 1973 will step down at the end of March.

    "When I started this journey in November 1973, I never realized it would be this long," she said.

    "I've enjoyed working for the county many years.Now it is time for my husband and me to enjoy trips," Long added.

    worth of rollback tax penalties owed to the county because the Barnetts had improperly claimed an agricultural exemption on quarry acreage.

    Long also sent a rollback tax penalty bill for $3,000 to Dudley Mooney, owner of acreage mined by Osborn Stone, and one for $2,027 to Robert Treadwell, owner of land quarried by C&M Materials.

    Tax Assessor-Collector Sandra Long filed her paperwork.Long filled one year of an unexpired term in 2001, was appointed by the county commissioners for the following two years and now will run for a regular four-year term.

    PALO PINTO - Property tax collections in Palo Pinto County are continuing in a normal fashion through mid-March, Tax Assessor-Collector Sandra Long reported Friday.

    According to figures from March 7, Palo Pinto County has collected 90.39 percent of all taxes for fiscal 2002.All but one school district reported 90 percent and above in collections on March 7, while collection rates for cities ranges from 75.38 percent to 90.23 percent.

    Long said she was "pleased" with the collection rates, noting the amount in taxes collected so far.

    "I think collections have been pretty well normal," Long said."We have good collections - we collected a total in current taxes of $25,375,281 through March 7.I'm well pleased with how things are going right now, as far as collections are concerned."

    The deadline to pay property taxes passed Jan. 31.Those who did not make payments by deadline were assessed penalties and interest of 7 percent in February, increasing to 9 percent in March, 11 percent in April, 13 percent in May and 18 percent in July, along with 15 percent in attorney fees for July.After July, 1 percent per month will be assessed in penalties and interest.

    Sandra R. Long, D-Santo, wants to continue serving the citizens of Palo Pinto County as their tax assessor-collector because she feels she serves the public with equality and honesty.

    With no formal opposition, she looks to do just that.

    "I enjoy my job," she said."I enjoy what I doing working with the public.I've worked in the tax offices in the county and three independent school districts for over 30 years.I'm not ready to retire and want to continue my service to this county."

    Long completed her education courses and state certification in 1990 and has taken 230 hours of continuing education and obtained re-certification since then.

    She graduated Mineral Wells High School in 1956 and has lived in Palo Pinto County for over 57 years and in Texas for all of her life.

    Palo Pinto County Tax Assessor-Collector Sandra Long said they need two computers - one for their Mineral Wells office and the other for the Palo Pinto location.She said they needed the machines because of the number of transactions that use credit cards.
