Joseph B. Long was hired on Aug. 21 as Lansing Community College's full-time Academic Team Leader in the field of surgical technology.
The surgical technology program at LCC prepares students to assist doctors and nurses in the operating room by identifying and handing them necessary instruments during the operation."Many students are unaware of the numerous health care choices they may have at their disposal," said Long."I work with many high school counselors creating a greater awareness for them, and hopefully providing the correct information to them, so they may inform young persons about the avenues they have to pursue other than becoming a nurse or physician, when it comes to possible career options to them."
In the past, Long has worked at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint for 12 years and Chelsea Community Hospital in Chelsea for 8 years, so he has a lot of experience in his field.
Long acquired his teaching experience from several years as an administrator and professor at Baker College in Jackson. He said that when he chose to accept the position at LCC he had no idea how much he would enjoy it, and he always had a desire to come to this level of academia."I came to LCC for numerous reasons," he said, "but probably the primary reason for my decision was due to this institution's highly valued reputation, its commitment to the community, and most importantly its desire to deliver quality education to the student."He went on to say that LCC is a, "Truly exceptional and educationally focused institution."
When asked what he does in his spare time, Long said, "Spare time? What spare time?"In the evenings he focuses his attentions primarily on his doctoral studies.
"Presently I am working on my second block of my dissertation in post secondary education through the University of Sarasota…I hope to receive this degree by June 2004.Maybe by then I will see my fishing boat again, which has been in storage since I began this degree."
Long has been happily married for almost 2 years to a "wonderful nurse" named Michelle. They married on his parents' 61st wedding anniversary with his father, who is a retired Baptist minister, performing the ceremony."One should not rush into these things," Long said."45 seemed like a good age to get married."
Long encourages anybody who would like more information on the surgical technology program at LCC to email him at longj9@lcc.edu or visit the surgical technologist's website at www.ast.org.
