"We need more routes, because SmartBus has proven people are willing to get out of their cars and catch the bus if it runs often enough," Bus Association policy manager Chris Loader said.

The meeting will include information on the enquiry process by a senior officer from the Department of Infrastructure, a presentation by Chris Loader (Bus Association of Victoria) on what we know of travel demand in this region, and a question and answer session to assist participants.

City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar said that the East-West Links Needs Assessment provides a very important opportunity for the community to have some input into future transportation solutions.

"The enquiry will look at transport issues in the East West corridor area north of central Melbourne and seeks responses that are integrated, strategic and regionally based," she said.

"I strongly encourage the community to take up this vital opportunity to influence the scope of this $5 milllion study," she said, "and I welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about the study to our community information session."

Council has been working with the Cities of Banyule, Darebin, Whittlesea, Manningham, Melbourne, Boroondara, Whitehorse and Maroondah, as well as the Shire of Nillimbuk and the Metropolitan Transport Forum to develop a joint submission.

"By working together with other Councils more detailed research can be commissioned and then used to provide a stronger, more substantiated submission," she said.
