Speaking from Edinburgh yesterday, Jim Livingstone, an IRC spokesman, said that the group had not given up hope of finding survivors. The volunteers, who manage to keep in contact with home via radio and satellite phone links, have been given an extra task of assisting the crisis management group of Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) in assessing what humanitarian aid was needed by the earthquake victims. The group, made up of two firefighters, an electrician, an engineer, a joiner, a mechanic, and a nurse, have undergone a three-year emergency rescue response training course."They say that there has been total disruption to every service and the people there are totally at a loss as to what happened," said Mr Livingstone.
