Tony Lippmotion picture talent agent, CAA
...
Tony Lipp always has taken a philosophical view of being an agent -- literally.A political philosophy major at Dartmouth College, the California native was working as an admissions director for the Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School -- which is part of the UCLA community and overseen by the university's Graduate School of Education -- when an agent suggested Lipp should give the CAA training program a shot."I thought, if I didn't like it, I could just go back to school," says Lipp, who was 24 at the time."My field was moral theory, so I figured the experience would have informed the rest of my life regardless."Lipp doesn't need to worry about filling out graduate school applications anytime soon: His clients now include Kristin Chenoweth, Blythe Danner, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Max Minghella and Patrick Wilson.
...
JUST A STAGE: Lipp, who also studied music and voice at the Royal Academy of Music in London, has proven successful at introducing theater talent into the Hollywood arena. But in the case of Minghella, Lipp discovered him not onstage but backstage in London after performances of Kenneth Lonergan's play "This Is Our Youth."
...
"He was obsessed with the play and would see it every week," Lipp says."We decided to take a shot on him. He's turned out to be an insanely talented actor." SERVING LIFE: "It's not about keeping clients hot," Lipp says of his agenting philosophy."It's what you can do to make sure they're working in 10 years, 20 years, 30 years from now. It's wondering, 'What will my profession look like over the next 40 years?' rather than, 'How big a star can I be in the next three?' Heat will come and go, but talent is fixed." SUNNY SIDE UP: Chances of running into Lipp around town on the weekends are slim."I figure if I have to read as much as I do, I might as well do it in a place that's very tranquil," he says.
