Larry Liffiton, the president of the Calgary teachers association, says the teachers are sending two messages - one to the school board and one to parents.

"Their last offer was not sufficient and we'd like you to return to the bargaining table with a better offer. The message to parents in Calgary is that teachers are trying to find a solution to this dispute. We recognize the importance of beginning a school year and getting off to a really good start, so we're going to do that."

Liffiton says that means no job action - at least for now - with classes beginning next week as planned.More negotiating sessions are scheduled over the next two weeks.
