Special education superintendent Heather Liffiton says it's a pipe dream. "We'll never be able to do mandatory vision screening as a school board, but we believe in it strongly as a means of early intervention," says Liffiton of the Greater Essex County board.Liffiton describes it as "shifting gears" from the health unit's responsibility to a shared effort between parents and the school board.

To her surprise, Liffiton was informed by a Grade 2 teacher last year, that a large portion of the teacher's class was not reading at an acceptable level.Twelve students were identified as non-readers and of those, eight came back with eyeglass prescriptions."That's an unusual number," admits Liffiton.
