Robert Levy and Spree Kripotos, who met in graduate school and who shared an interest in quantitative research and money management, founded CDA in 1966.When founding the company, they had two objectives: managing capital and engaging in quantitative research activities.

In December 1986, Levy and Kripotos sold the company to a UK firm, which promptly decided to divest and in turn sold it a year later to Thomson.CDA now operates within the CDA Investment Technologies group of Thomson Financial Services.
In 1987, Thomson tried to purchase the Canadian quote vendor CMQ for $111 million Canadian.However, this move was thwarted by Telerate, which had been distributing its services through CMQ in Canada.The distribution agreement with CMQ gave Telerate the right of first refusal, which it exercised to keep Thomson from extending its influence over Telerate's Canadian operations.
