Bob Levy, a senior vice president of Malco, said the company is committed to coming to Madison and working with the city to answer any questions.
    ...
Levy said the $16 million "very upscale" Madison theater will be patterned after its showcase theater in Memphis. The interior of the building will have the same Italian courtyard feel, and all the amenities of the Memphis building will be in Madison, he said.

The company plans a wine/cappuccino bar, an Internet cafe, a Playstation rental area and party rooms for rent in the main lobby. The bar is monitored closely, and beverages cannot be taken into the film showings, Levy said.

The theaters will range in size from seating for 100 to 400, Levy said.Several of the auditoriums will have glass-enclosed rooms at the back -- "like a luxury box at a stadium" for viewers to reserve, he said.

Architects from the company plan to meet with Butler next week.Levy said the company would like to settle any concerns so it can bring its presentation to the March 8 Madison Planning and Zoning Board, the first step in the approval process.
    ...
If city officials approve the plans, Levy said the company could break ground in May and finish construction by May 2005.

Construction could begin as early as May with completion set for May 2005, said Robert T. Levy, Malco's senior vice president. He said it will be the company's largest theater outside its flagship, the Paradiso, in Memphis.
    ...
Malco isn't new to Mississippi, but it's been eyeing the Jackson market for about 10 years, Levy said.

"We feel it finally reached the critical mass," he said, explaining why the company decided to venture into the northern end of Jackson's metropolitan area.

"We're competitors to a certain extent in the entertainment business," said Bobby Levy, senior vice president of the movie theater firm. But marketing studies show a high correlation between NBA game attendees and movie-goers, Levy said.

That makes the signs, program ads and mentions on the public address system at games and other events, coupled with Grizzlies ads in Malco theaters, a way of giving the company a high profile in the community, Levy said.

We have to keep our options open," Malco senior vice president Bobby Levy said.

"We've been thinking about it for years, changing the theater, doing something different with the older theaters," Levy added."After the first of the year, we'll make our plans. . . . We may do nothing except continue as we are."

Levy declined to discuss the changes being considered, but in an application to the Memphis Alcohol Commission, some details of a possible plan were revealed.

At a recent meeting, the Alcohol Commission awarded Malco a beer permit for the Highland Quartet.

This plan appears to convert at least a portion of the theater into something resembling a sports bar.

According to that scenario, the theater will change in several ways:

    ...
Levy said the locally owned company still plans to operate the Quartet as a movie theater, but that a name change is being considered.

According to lease documents contained in the Alcohol Commission package, Malco renewed its lease - which expired Jan. 31, 2001 - for another five years until 2006.

A representative of Loeb Realty, which manages and owns the building, said any changes could only benefit Malco and the other tenants.
