  "I heard from my client, ‘We've already hired her and she's just great, but we figure we should go ahead and do a background check anyway,'" recalls Lynn Levy of L.H. Levy Investigation.
  
  So Levy got to work.What she found was that this perfect employee had embezzled about $25,000 from a previous employer-and very recently at that.
  
  "There was a gap on the candidate's resume so I started looking at things more closely," says Levy."Turns out that this individual was out on bail, but hadn't yet been to trial.In the end, the newly hired employee agreed to make restitution of the $25,000."
  
  After the once-delighted manager picked herself off the floor, the employee was summarily canned."Doing a background check after the fact is not advisable," notes Levy, a bilingual (Spanish and English) private investigator in Baltimore County.Still, it could have been worse.
