The Coalition's Professional Learning Center once again collaborated with Dr. Petros Levounis to present a four-part training initiative for mental health and addiction clinicians, psychiatrists and nurses.

The goal of this series was to educate staff from chemical dependency and mental health programs on the principles of psychopharmacology as applied to consumers who suffer from mental illness and substance abuse disorders.Dr. Levounis reviewed medications that target the addictive process with emphasis on newer agents that have been recently approved by the FDA, and discuss advances in the pharmacological management of the addicted consumer who also suffers from co-occurring mental illness.Critical subject matter will include, 1) balancing the potential benefits of different medications against their inherent and patient specific risks, and 2) critically evaluating pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments; alone or in combination.

Participants committed to attending the entire four part training and agreed to participate in a two part evaluation process in order to obtain 12 Continuing Education Credits.

Petros Levounis, MD, MA, is the Director of The Addiction Institute of New York (formerly Smithers) and Chief of Addiction Psychiatry at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York City.Dr. Levounis is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).He currently teaches at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York University School of Medicine and School of Nursing, and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.
