Brad Levitt, head for Asian fixed income for Standard Chartered Bank, said the bond market was expected to recover from 2004's slowdown as institutional investors increase their weightings in the money market.

Activity in the local market partly represented adjustments by fund managers to match durations with rising interest rate trends.

"Institutional investors have been rebalancing their portfolios, rather than completely selling bonds out," Mr Levitt said yesterday.

Expectations of further rate hikes by central banks would have less impact on the overall market this year than last year, he said.

Growing demand for funds to finance investment with the growing economy, together with government plans to finance new infrastructure megaprojects through asset securitisation, would help to boost supply in the market, particularly for structured products.

Mr Levitt said Thailand could follow Malaysia last year and help draw new inflows through securitisation issues.

Cross-border transactions were increasing throughout the region, he said, with interest among fund managers in Singapore and Hong Kong in local-currency Asian bonds growing.
