    Congressman Elliott Levitas received the Thomas B. Murphy Lifetime Achievement Award from the Democratic Party of Georgia at the 2008 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner held on January 30.

    Mr. Levitas was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives where he managed the legislation that created Georgia's Department of Natural Resources, and from 1975 to 1985, he represented Georgia's 4th Congressional District.In Congress, Mr. Levitas was active in the legislative revisions of the Clean Air and Water Acts, enactment of the Superfund Law, and in revisions to RCRA, FIFRA and TSCA.He joined Kilpatrick Stockton as a partner in 1985.Since then, Mr. Levitas' practice has been divided between general civil law, with emphasis on government matters, strategic management, legislative and government agency, and direct litigation and regulatory practice.In March 1999, Mr. Levitas joined the plaintiffs' litigation team in the landmark class action of Cobell v. Kempthorne, representing more than 500,000 Native Americans suing the United States government for breach of trust and for an accounting in connection with the lands and billions of dollars of Indian trust funds held by the United States since the 1880's.
