"This is the most significant new development related to the Mutter Museum in recent years," said Dick Levinson at the College of Physicians, which houses the Mutter Museum on 22nd Street in Philadelphia. The museum was founded in 1858 to advance the study of medicine.
"We have been searching for an appropriate way to honor her memory," Levinson said.
As director of the Mutter Museum, Worden showed "the power of one person to make a difference," he added.
The Shanghai-born Worden joined the museum as a curatorial assistant in 1975 and became director in 1988.
In 1991, the Mutter attracted just 5,454 visitors.
But, with an orchestrated campaign of interviews, lectures and museum tours, she increased visitation to 59,394 by last June.Visitorship is expected to top 65,000 this year, said Levinson.
Along the way, in 1985 and 1991, she appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman."In 2001, she and the museum were featured on Errol ("Thin Blue Line") Morris' "First Person" TV series. In 2002, she wrote a book about the museum, "Mutter Museum," a compilation of 100 photographs and essays published by Blast Books.
"In most museums you go to look at objects," she wrote in the preface of the book.
