Allison Taylor Levine, communications director of Delaware Health and Social Services, said this month has received special attention since the state was just awarded $2 million from the Department of Justice to fund the development of a multi-agency network to reintegrate repeat substance abuse offenders back into the community.
The funding, which will be distributed over the next three years, is part of a $100 million grant being awarded to 49 states, she said.
"Plans are still in the works, but some areas that are addressed are public safety, education, housing and follow-up care," Levine said.
This grant will aid many of the events being featured throughout September, she said.
Events like a barbecue and a baseball game sponsored by Brandywine Counseling and Delaware Health and Social Services are designed to include the community and to increase awareness of substance abuse.

Levine said the dedication of September will coincide with the opening of a new counseling and treatment center for the state.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Kent County building is planned for Sept. 19, she said.
Levine said this month-long campaign would bring much-needed attention to the issue of substance abuse and the need for treatment.
"The month is set aside to highlight the strides made in substance abuse treatment, and to educate the public that addiction is a chronic, but treatable, public health problem that affects us all," she said.
