Karen Elaine Young and Otto C.W. Lee overcame much reticence and four years of separation to have their wedding bands inscribed with the words "love, dreams and promises."

They talked in his room until 1 a.m., when Mr. Lee walked her home."I was shocked," he says."My friends started analyzing, and really it was with their encouragement that I started to pursue her."

Their relationship turned a corner when she invited him to her sister's 21st birthday celebration.En route, Ms. Young's sister asked, "What's going on between the two of you?"Both Ms. Young and Mr. Lee responded with embarrassed denial.He admits, "We were both too chicken to make the first move."

When he accompanied Ms. Young home, Mr. Lee purposefully forgot his sweater."I left it behind for one more chance to talk to her," he admits.At her apartment, they discussed a myriad of topics, carefully avoiding any reference to personal feelings until a disheartened Mr. Lee was about to leave.She chirped, "The thing my sister mentioned -- I'm sorry," and as they held their feelings up to the light, he confesses, "I was hesitant -- I didn't want to be the rebound guy."She says she was reluctant because "in eight months Otto would start four years of school in Chicago.Did I want to get involved in a long-distance thing that rarely works?"By the time he left, they were a couple.

During his time in Chicago they spoke almost daily but saw each other only several times a year.

Mr. Lee called Hong Kong to get her parents' consent for a surprise engagement.

The weekend before Ms. Young's graduation, which Mr. Lee could not attend, he surprised her with a "special weekend."His parents had obtained the engagement ring at a clandestine midnight meeting with her mother.

The next evening, while strolling to the CN Tower, the bulging ring box was in his left pocket, covered by his shirttail.He ensured that she would hold his right hand by feigning a golf injury to his left.

The couple reside in Toronto, where Mrs. Lee, 27, with a BA from the University of Toronto and a BEd from the University of Western Ontario, teaches for the Toronto Board of Education.

Dr. Lee, 27, an accomplished fencer, with a BSc from the University of Toronto and an O.D. from the Illinois College of Optometry, practises in Hamilton.
