"I never thought about going into politics," says council hopeful and retired HSBC banker David Lee, who now volunteers as executive director of the Chinese Cultural Centre."What really convinced me was that [Councillor] B.C.Lee is not running again, and they need a Chinese [person] to be on the NPA team, and there was no one.Yet on the Vision side, George Chow announced he's running again, and you've got Raymond Louie.Chinatown needs someone with a Chinese background to communicate to it."

Lee hopes his lengthy financial career will lend to the budgetary aspects of City Hall, and that his connections in Chinatown will help to revitalize the neighbourhood.

Despite the fact that the most vulnerable parts of East Hastings lie mere blocks away from where he spends much of his time, Lee has little to say about InSite, the controversial safe-injection site."I don't know enough to comment on this topic because I have not been into an injection site," he says.Of the large homeless population in the area, Lee says the solution might not lie in housing itself."I understand the police chief is shipping the chronic criminals back to where they're from — maybe there's an outstanding warrant for them in Toronto, Winnipeg or Calgary. That helps," he says.

    Lee informed, because they responded."

One of them is David Lee, a commercial agricultural loan officer with Carolina Farm Credit and a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association of WNC, a group that has mustered volunteers for every Ramp Festival so far.

"It's a chance for us to come together and have fun, get to know each other outside of the mortgage industry and do some good for the community," said Lee, who also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, Wheels for the World and Pedals for Progress.

"But the most important thing is that each year we have impacted the life of a family to make things easier for them, as far as accessibility goes," he said."Even though we impact the lives of others, we also receive blessings ourselves as individuals, as an organization and as a community," he said.

Lee has announced that he's not running for reelection, leaving Vancouver's ruling party without a council candidate of Chinese descent.

Ladner told the Straight that David Lee is a member of the board of directors of the Chinese Cultural Centre and previously served on the board of SUCCESS, which provides services for immigrants.

So given our collective concerns about the economy, why haven't we seen more coverage from Bula, Paulson and Garr on the other candidates, especially new candidates like the NPA's David Lee?

Lee is a former Bank Manager, Head of Asian Markets, and Senior Vice President of HSBC Bank Canada, with 35 years in the financial industry. He probably knows more about international banking and finance than anyone who has ever previously run for Vancouver City Council. At a time when the world is facing one of its greatest financial challenges in 75 years, I would like to think that all sensible Vancouver taxpayers would want Lee on Council.
