A meeting of Upstate Young Democrats will be held on Saturday morning, and we will be joined by NYS Young Democrats President Evan Lederman.

"The younger generation is really yearning for a charismatic, energetic figure, and he showed a lot of potential," said Evan Lederman, a 23-year-old law student who was among the nearly 500 young New Yorkers who came to check out the emerging White House prospect."Part of his appeal is that he's not an entrenched politician."

The foray was just one of several by Edwards aimed at younger voters in recent weeks.

Last month, he traded laugh lines with host Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show," a program on the Comedy Central cable TV station.And last week, Edwards delivered a major address on education at the University of Maryland.

Evan Lederman, president of the New York State Young Democrats and a third-year law student, said the candidates' answers were very general but noted that conflicts between neighborhoods and universities may be too local for a mayor to contend with.

So if NYU decides to build another dorm in the Village, Lederman said, residents may need to turn elsewhere for help.

"I don't know how much a mayor can actually do," he said. •

However NYU College Democrats President Evan Lederman said the city is still a liberal stronghold and will remain that way.

"I don't think the city's shifting.The fact that we have a a Republican governor is due to special circumstances," Lederman said."You had [Rudolph] Giuliani who was tough on crime but he was always pro-choice.In general he knew that if he was going to be elected and viable he would have to stay somewhere in the middle."

"I don't think The Sun is going to make much of an inroads," Lederman said."I think the [New York Post] has that market cornered.I don't think the liberal press will really have to respond to it.It will be a non-issue."

The Sun may find some student supporters, however, as it will be reprinting articles from the Conrad Black-owned Jerusalem Post, a widely-read paper among Jewish students at NYU.
