"There are really two kinds of diabetes," said Don LeClair, executive director of the P.E.I. Active Living Alliance."There's the kind you are born with that starts with birth and can usually only be controlled by medicine. Then there's type-2 diabetes which is very strongly linked to lifestyle." The council came forward with a series of recommendations, three related to management of type-2 diabetes and five related to strategies for preventing or delaying the illness. Those efforts, ranging from improved exercise and diet habits to diabetes-themed professional development for health workers, are being targeted at reducing the toll of an illness that is more common and more damaging than the public may realize, according to LeClair."The thing which a lot of people don't realize is that while you read in obituary that someone died of heart attack or stroke often a precursor of these diseases is that someone had diabetes," he said."There's a distinct link between lifestyle and onset of obesity, between onset of obesity and development of the two diabetes, then between the onset of diabetes and the heart disease or stroke that's listed as the cause of death."LeClair said he sees the possibility for a multi-themed, multi-agency strategy for diabetes prevention. The groups at this month's meeting set themselves a deadline of six to eight months in which to study the discussion paper and come back with an action plan."One of the niceties about the whole thing is that while this was focused primarily on diabetes and the workshop was funded under the diabetes strategy many of the principles are transferable into prevention of other lifestyle-related diseases," he said.

It hasn't surfaced with any of our meetings with coaches or association presidents," said Don LeClair, president of Baseball P.E.I. "We certainly would be open to it if people wish to go there. It's certainly the movement nationally."
