   Dubai-based Al Habtoor Group, headed by Khalaf Al Habtoor, announced that it is developing new creative theme projects in Lebanon with an investment of $400 million. "The investment will be an important step towards the process of rebuilding Lebanon. Al Habtoor Group, already employing over 10,000 staff throughout its organisation, will be creating a job opportunity for 2500 persons in Lebanon with this project," a statement from the group said.

   Banque Audi and Banque Saradar, Lebanon's fourth and 10th largest banks respectively, announced the signature yesterday of a merger-acquisition agreement that will create the country's largest bank group in terms of assets. The consolidated assets of the new entity, to be known as Audi-Saradar, on the basis of December 2003 accounts, would come to $9.06 billion, equal to 40 per cent of Lebanon's gross domestic product and 15pc of the banking market.

   On Tuesday, the Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL) and the municipality of Damour announced the launch and preliminary details of the technology village BETZ. Located in the hills of Damour, with a dominant view of the Mediterranean Sea, the project will be the largest initiative of the Lebanese government in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
   
   “We are spearheading the creation of BETZ as a much needed facility to showcase Lebanon as a potential and sustainable hub for technological development in the MENA region and to promote specialization in niche markets where Lebanon offers a competitive advantage,” said chairman of IDAL Samih Barbir during the conference held in Damour, south of Beirut.

   BETZ became a possibility through a $260,000 grant given by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) which was used by US consultant Graeber Simmons and Cowan to prepare its feasibility study. “We recognized, in a very early stage, the potential of Damour for hosting this project,” United States Ambassador to Lebanon Vincent Battle told The Daily Star on the sidelines of the conference. “The potential for Lebanon in becoming an ICT hub through this project is fantastic since it has a highly educated population and is a top user of technology in the region,” he added. The main facilities of BETZ will include anchor facilities for a major tenant, an incubator for start up businesses, single and multi-tenant subdivisions, a village center with executive suite offices, a hotel, recreational facilities, a conference center, banking facilities, an electric sub-station with full capacity standby power, advanced technology communication network and large landscaped area. During the conference, the private sector has shown great interest in this project since representatives of Intel, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Inmarsat and many other local ICT companies were present. “BETZ is a great project and will help Lebanon as a whole. For example, there are many small computer assembly companies in Lebanon which work in a difficult environment,” said regional manager of Intel Gilbert Lacroix. “BETZ could bring these companies together to create a strong ICT sector for the country ­ one which could export,” he added.

   The next Miss Lebanon?
   
   The Daily Star: Beauty season is back, and the lives of 16 candidates for the Miss Lebanon competition will enter people's homes through 24-hour coverage. This year the show will again be formatted in the style of "Star Academy," "Big Brother" and other reality television programs, with the 16 girls living in one house and being filmed nonstop for the audience to vote them out, until only three remain. more

   For nomination, I choose none of them because in my opinion all 16 girls are ugly with no personality. If this is the best Lebanon has to offer, then it is better for Lebanon to cancel the program in order not to embarrasse the country and the women of Lebanon. I used to believe that our beauty was far better than this, however as Lebanon has developed through time with its beauty, its women have not.

   This show will send the winner to miss world to represent Lebanon and it would be such a bad image for your country to send Abir, Nisreen, Solonge, or Ailine. The first three are not attractive at all and would be an embarrasment to a country that is known for its beautiful women...and Aileen is such a fake and an actress that the girls at miss world would hate her and think all Leb girls are bitches.
