Abby Leavitt, who keeps on top of physician recruitment and retention at QHC, said there are about 20,000 to 30,000 orphaned patients - residents without a family doctor - in Hastings and Prince Edward counties.
She said Hastings needs about10 family doctors, while Belleville requires 10 to 15, depending on how large a practice each will open and how many current doctors plan on retiring in the next several years.
...
That means doctors "follow their own patients that are admitted to hospital," Leavitt said.
It also means taking part in the hospital call rotation, one day every two weeks as it now stands. The doctors could be called in to see patients who show up at hospital and do not have a family doctor.
"They would admit any of the orphan patients in the community that need to be admitted," Leavitt said, and look after the patients until they are discharged.
The doctor and nursing shortage remains so acute that Leavitt asked for members of the public to talk to anyone they see over the holidays who is a physician or nurse, or a student in the two professions.
Call her with any leads, Leavitt said, at 969-7400, ext. 2600, or e-mail her at aleavitt@qhc.on.ca.
